Roel Vertegaal is a Dutch professor, interaction designer and electronic musician. He holds a Chair in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) at Radboud University in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Prior to this he was Director of HCI Research at Huawei Consumer Business Group and Professor and Director at the Human Media Lab at Queen’s University in Canada. Roel invented many of today’s modern mobile interaction techniques, such as the flexible and foldable smartphone (Huawei Mate X and Galaxy Fold), attention-aware interactions (Apple iPhone and iPad, Google Hub), light field smartphones and full body video conferencing as well as interactive drone swarms (Flying LEGO). Roel authored over 150 refereed scientific articles, books and patents (h-index 48, 10K+ citations). Roel was awarded the ACM SIGCHI Academy Award and his work features widely in the popular press, from Scientific American to CNN.
