Abstract: I will discuss how Marshall McLuhan, and English professor who became an international figure, came to study technology and culture through literature and literary criticism. We will take a brief look at a few of McLuhan’s key ideas: “The medium is the message”, figure and ground, the four laws of media (where media = ’the extensions of man’), and to finish where we start, we will explore perception, and why McLuhan believed, as Ezra Pound said, “The artist is the antennae of the race”.
